From Lisbon, Benagil is a full day: about 266 km and close to three hours each way in a van, for a few hours on the Algarve coast. It can be done, and one such trip has more than a thousand reviews. Check whether the boat into the cave is in the price: only two of the seven trips we list include it outright.

Lisbon to the Algarve is a classic long day out. The trips leave early, drive south through the Alentejo, and string Benagil together with Lagos, Ponta da Piedade, Carvoeiro and Algar Seco before the drive back. Benagil is one stop of several.
Is it worth it? If Lisbon is your only base and the Algarve coast is on your list, it is a fair one-day sample. If you will be in the Algarve later in the trip, wait: from Carvoeiro or Armação de Pêra the cave is 15 to 25 minutes by boat.

Read the boat line. The most-reviewed trip includes a 30-minute boat to Benagil “subject to weather conditions and availability”. One includes it on the small-group option only. On the others the boat is an optional extra, or, on “Lisbon: Explore the Algarve Coast & Benagil Cave by Boat”, a fixed stop whose ticket is not included and is not refunded if the sea cancels the boat. The van goes whatever the weather; the boat does not.
No Lisbon operator sails to Benagil; these are day trips with transport. The calendar below is the most-reviewed trip that includes the cave boat.

Prices are GetYourGuide "from" prices in US dollars, per person unless the card says "priced per boat", ratings and review counts as captured 12 September or 3 October 2026; they move with season and availability — the live widget and the booking page are the reference. Sea permitting: swell over about 1.5 m closes the cave. Booking through these links may earn us a commission at no extra cost to you; it never changes the order or the verdicts.
In the Algarve later anyway? Then skip the six hours in the van and take a boat from Carvoeiro or Armação de Pêra, 15 to 25 minutes from the cave.

Wherever you leave from, the same binding rules govern the cave itself (Edital 019/2024 of the Capitania do Porto de Portimão, in force since 13 August 2024, amended by Edital 009/2025 on 30 July 2025): you cannot land on the beach inside, you cannot swim or float in, and motorised boats may only enter for a brief look. Kayaks and SUPs go in with a guide, one guide for every six craft. It's the same cave under the same law — the town only changes how you get there.

Full detail, with the official sources, is on the access-rules section of the main guide. If any Lisbon operator promises a stop on the beach inside Benagil, that's the pre-2024 experience — check before paying. Swell over about 1.5 m closes the cave regardless of tide: check the live sea conditions before you fix a date.
By road: about 266 km, close to three hours each way, so most people take a day trip with transport. By train you reach Tunes junction in about two and a half hours and need a taxi to the coast from there. A car, or a night in the Algarve, makes it a much easier visit.
No. Intercidades and Alfa Pendular trains run from Lisbon to Tunes junction in about two and a half hours; Benagil has no station, so the last stretch is a taxi.
For most people, yes: seen from the water with the light through the skylight it is one of the great sights on the Iberian coast. From Lisbon, weigh it against six hours in a van. Our full verdict page covers who it suits.
Only those whose boat is included or that you add on the day, and only when the sea allows. Boats enter for about two minutes under the 2024 rules; nobody lands on the beach inside. Each card on this page says whether the boat is included, optional at extra cost, or not part of the day.
A long one: about three hours in the van each way plus several hours on the coast, so the trips leave early and are back in the evening.
