Benagil cave kayak tours: the only way to eight minutes inside
Boats get two minutes at the arch. A guided kayak or SUP group gets up to eight, through the eastern entrance, low to the water, under the skylight. Since August 2024 it is also the only way to enter Benagil under your own power: no swimming in, no unguided rentals. Can kayaks go into Benagil Cave? Yes, with a guide, for eight minutes
The question people ask Google most about Benagil has a clean answer since August 2024. Guided kayak and SUP groups enter the algar through the eastern entrance in single file, one guide for every six craft, up to seven craft inside at once under the 2024 text (operators report fourteen since the July 2025 amendment), and stay for up to eight minutes. A motorised boat gets two. Nobody lands on the sand inside, nobody swims in, and renting a kayak to go in without a guide is banned in the caves area, which is exactly why the guided paddle is now the closest thing to the old Benagil experience.

The rules every boat and every kayak share (Edital 019/2024, Capitania do Porto de Portimão, in force since 13 August 2024, amended July 2025): no landing on the beach inside, no swimming or floating in, no unguided kayak or SUP rental into the caves area. Motorised boats enter by the western arch for two minutes, up to three boats under 12 m at once or one boat over 12 m. Paddle craft enter by the eastern entrance in guided groups of six per guide, up to seven inside at once, for up to eight minutes. What a guided Benagil paddle actually involves
Tours meet at Benagil beach (a few at neighbouring Albandeira or Carvalho), where the guide fits life jackets, hands out paddles and dry bags and runs a briefing on cave etiquette: how to hold position in the surge, how to enter single file. The cave itself is a 150–200 m paddle from the sand; the popular 2–3 hour routes continue along the cliffs to the smaller grottoes locals call Pirate Cave and Monster Cave, and on to Praia da Marinha, with a swim stop in open water on calm days. Tandem kayaks are the norm; some operators run three-seaters for a child in the middle.
The paddle itself is short. The eight minutes inside are the whole point.
Express (1–1.5 h)
Beach to the cave and the two nearest grottoes and back. The cheapest way in and enough for most people who just want the eight minutes under the eye.
Classic (2–2.5 h)
Cave plus Pirate and Monster caves plus Praia da Marinha, usually with a swim stop. The standard product and the best value.
Small-group premium (2–3 h)
Six guests per guide or per tour, 4K photos included, snacks and water, a slower pace and a longer coast. Worth the extra $10–15 if photos matter.
Sunrise & sunset
The emptiest cave and the softest light; sunrise also solves the summer parking problem. Fewer operators, book ahead.

Higher viewpoint, better photos, more skill. Standing under the skylight is the shot people come for, but the cave mouth surges even on calm days, so you need balance and a flat sea; guides will have you kneel through the entrance. From $35–58, usually with photos included.

Before you pick a slot
The one number that decides the day. The live reading on the home page uses the same three bands; check it the evening before.
Parking at Benagil is the trap. One operator's own listing says it plainly: from July to September arrive an hour early or you may miss the tour; the 07:00 and 09:00 slots are the easy ones. Some operators include a reserved parking spot, which is worth the small premium.
Swell. Over about 1.5 m the cave closes and the paddle becomes a coastal trip or a cancellation; check the live reading the evening before and book free-cancellation dates.
Fitness and kids. The cave is an easy 150–200 m; the full routes are a few kilometres over 2–3 hours. Tandems take a child in front; three-seaters exist. Non-swimmers and under-fives: ask the operator first.
What to wear. Swimwear under quick-dry clothes, water shoes or strapped sandals, hat, sunscreen. The operator supplies kayak, paddle, life jacket and usually a dry bag. You will get wet.
Light. The skylight beam is steepest 10:00–13:00 from May to October, but that is also when every boat on the coast is at the arch; an early slot trades the hard beam for an empty cave.

No. Swimming or floating into the cave has been banned since 13 August 2024 under Edital 019/2024, after years of rescues at the cave mouth. Some kayak tours include a swim stop on calm days, in open water or at a beach on the route, never inside the cave.
Not by renting one: unguided rental into the caves area is banned. The Edital targets rentals rather than private craft, but the caps, the entrance rule and the eight-minute limit apply to everyone and are enforced from the water, so in practice a guided tour is the way in. Bringing your own kayak is a grey area we cannot confirm from the text.

The Benagil paddles launch from Benagil beach (or the neighbouring Albandeira and Carvalho beaches), about 40 km east of Lagos, 40 minutes by road. Lagos has its own sea-cave kayaking around Ponta da Piedade, which is a different, and excellent, trip. To paddle into Benagil itself, drive to Benagil or Albandeira for a morning slot.
Kayak for stability, tandem seats, kids and anyone unsure on the water; SUP for a higher viewpoint, better photos and the feeling of standing under the skylight. It needs balance in the cave's surge and a calmer sea. Both follow the same eastern-entrance, eight-minute rule.
The cave is a 150–200 m paddle from Benagil beach, so the cave alone is easy; the full 2–3 hour routes to Marinha and Albandeira cover a few kilometres with a swim stop and suit anyone reasonably active. Guides brief you on the beach and steer you through the entrance. Under-fives and non-swimmers should ask the operator first.
