Benagil boat tours: speedboat, small boat or catamaran?

By boat if you want the whole grotto coast in one go, by guided kayak if you want the longest time inside the cave itself. Boats get two minutes at the western arch; a guided kayak or SUP group gets up to eight minutes through the eastern entrance. For most first-timers a small boat from Benagil beach, Carvoeiro or Armação de Pêra is the sweet spot: minutes to the cave from Benagil, 15–25 minutes each way from the towns, the cave plus a dozen neighbouring grottoes, from about $16.

Yes, on a licensed boat under 12 m, for two minutes, entering through the western arch. Up to three such boats can be inside at once under the 2024 text (operators report five since the 2025 amendment). Boats over 12 m, the big catamarans, enter one at a time or hold at the entrance, so on a catamaran trip ask whether a smaller tender does the entry.

Not inside. Since August 2024 you cannot swim or float in, cannot land on the interior beach, and cannot rent an unguided kayak or SUP in the caves area. You can see the cave from the clifftop on the Seven Hanging Valleys trail (the skylight from above), and Benagil beach itself is a normal public beach, but the cave is a licensed-boat or guided-paddle visit only.

Yes. Catamarans leave Marina de Albufeira for a 45–60 minute crossing, usually bundled with dolphin watching, 2.5–3 hours in total, from about $35. The big catamarans view the cave from the entrance; check whether a smaller boat does the entry if going inside matters to you.

About 45–60 minutes by speedboat along the coast, passing Ponta da Piedade on the way; roughly 40 km and 40 minutes by road to Carvoeiro if you would rather drive to the closest launch. Lagos departures usually combine the cave with dolphins and run 2–2.5 hours.

Yes. Private boats run from Portimão and Albufeira, priced per hull rather than per person, several hundred dollars upwards, and they follow exactly the same two-minute, three-boats rule inside the cave. For the famous beam of light through the skylight, roughly 10:00–13:00 from May to October. For an emptier cave and calmer water, the first departures around 07:30–09:00 or the sunset runs. The light window is a viewing sweet spot, not a legal access window. The rules cap time inside, not the hour.

Swimwear or quick-dry clothes under a light layer, a hat that will not blow off, sunscreen and sunglasses. On speedboats and RIBs expect spray: sandals with a strap rather than flip-flops, and a dry bag for the phone. Seasickness-prone? Pick a bigger, slower boat and a calm-sea day.

For most people, yes: the cave from the water with the light through the oculus is still one of the great sights on the Iberian coast. Set expectations (it is a two-minute visit shared with other boats) and read the verdict page before you book a fixed morning in August.
